VIII. Circles in the Water.
Reading edition
Kringetjes in ’t Water, III, blz. 161.
Pebble-stone, so smooth and round, In the stream with gurgling sound, Down when dashing, Round a splashing, How the silv’ry pearls abound! Swift from casting hand you’re sliding, Wriggling down away then gliding.
Where the pebble stone has been, In the water a circle is seen, Further flowing, Ever growing, Long observed by gazers keen; Ever showing by its bending, Where the stone fell swift descending.
Recollect, my lass, my lad, Thus it goes with good and bad; Hours don’t tarry, Years will carry Long the marks of deeds, oft sad. Pointed out by conscience’ finger, In the heart that spot doth linger!
