I. On Awaking.

Merry sunshine, morning light, On my window panes you glitter, With such golden colours bright, And my feather’d songsters twitter; Thankful then, indeed, I may, Praise thee, Lord, for this fine day.
Lo! at night repose is sought, Rest I find, exempt from sorrow; And by every one ’t is thought: Sure the sun will shine to morrow! No one thinks “perhaps, in vain, He’ll be called to rise again.”
No one thinks “perhaps, o Sun, When thy next rays shine bright beaming, My own race may then be run, After dozing, sleeping, dreaming”.... Therefore, lovely morning-light, Hail I thee, with thankful sight.
