JAPANESE BABIES.

Reading edition

Illustration from St. Nicholas, Vol. 13, No. 12, October 1886

A little bird sings from over the sea: “I’ve been to a land that pleases me. “’Tis a fabulous land where babies don’t cry From the time they are born till the time they die. You queer little baby, way over the sea, Tell us, oh, tell us, how can it be. Aren’t Japanese baby clothes ever too tight? Don’t Japanese babies wake up in the night? Do Japanese teeth come through without pain? Or Japanese children tease babies in vain? Don’t Japanese pins have points that prick? Wont Japanese colic make little folk sick? You queer little baby, if secret there be Send it, oh, send it way over the sea! There is no such secret. Far off in Japan Some babies can cry, and they’ll prove that they can!
