The Hand of Man.

The human hand is the symbol of the mind, and in many ways reveals the inmost thoughts of its possessor. Unconsciously, fear and hatred, as well as love and affection, finds its expression there. Often when the eye is calm and the voice is hushed a twitch of the fingers or a motion of the hand is the tell-tale of our heart’s secrets. It is therefore more difficult to control than any other part of our human anatomy.

The hand is the servant of the brain, and faithfully executes every faculty of the mind in the works of art and skill, in the gathering of knowledge; the brain sends its thought currents down constantly, each nerve current leaving some trace of its passage, however small. These currents are necessarily charged with moulding and directing forces of thought, feeling and will. This vital connection with the brain determines the development of the hand and renders each portion significant of some mental faculty, or of its modes of action. The hand for that reason corresponds with that of the head. A beautiful and well-formed hand indicates a well-balanced head and character. Broad hands go with a broad character, narrow hands with a narrow head, yet, if long, indicate insight and depth. Large hands belong to people who do the real work of life and the world; they do not shrink from carrying out the plans of their owner; they take hold and do things without gloves.

Small hands belong to those who plan great things, but employ others to carry the plans into execution; they dislike to submit to exact rules and minute details; their owner uses general terms rather than precise statements.

Hard hands have active power; soft hands, passive endurance.

Warm hands, large, with well developed palm, belong to the magnetic type, with tendencies celestial. Cold hands are electric with tendencies terrestrial.

THE PALM represents the physical organization.

THE FINGERS indicate the mental capacity.

THE THUMB, motive and managing ability.
