Transcriber’s Notes: On page 5 the Arabic خَاتَمٌ is “khatam” not “khatim,” as described; the latter would be خَاتِمٌ. Both, however, may mean a ring or signet. Links were added from the LIST OF PLATES to each individual plate. The footnotes were gathered and moved to a separate section of the book (see Footnotes.) On page 51 there were two sidenotes for “Class II”. The second was changed to “Class III.” Missing or obscured punctuation was silently corrected. Typographical errors were silently corrected. Inconsistent spelling and hyphenation were made consistent only when a predominant form was found in this book.
