AT THE SEA-SIDE

Reading edition

When I was down beside the sea, A wooden spade they gave to me, To dig the sandy shore. My holes were empty like a cup. In every hole the sea came up, Till it could come no more.

A brown-haired child is kneeling and playing in the sand, facing away from the viewer. They wear a light-colored long-sleeved shirt or tunic with a white skirt or apron. The sea lies ahead of the child. Rocks are to the right with a small pail and shovel in front of them.
