“The French translater indulges in skepticism concerning Hamel’s narrative, questioning especially his geographical statements. Before a map of Corea, with the native sounds even but approximated, it will be seen that Hamel’s story is a piece of downright unembroidered truth. It is indeed to be regretted that this actual observer of Corean life, people, and customs gave us so little information concerning them” (Griffis, Corea, 1905, bl. 176).—“Mit Hülfe unserer japanischen Karte von Korai (Atlas No. 6) konnten wir die Reiseroute, der Hamel gefolgt is, nachweisen und die meisten verstümmelten Ortsnamen, deren er in seinem Tagebuche erwähnt, entziffern” (v.
