Note 36 — THE TEMPLE OF FAME.
Reading edition
The pause at the word "strikes" renders the verse finely descriptive of the circumstance. Milton, in Par. Lost, xi. 491, has attempted this beauty with success:
And over them triumphant Death his dart Shook, but delayed to strike.—Wakefield.
