Note 1349 — Chapter XV · THE NORMAN INVASION AND THE CAMPAIGN OF HASTINGS.[1055] (continued 2)
Reading edition
See vol. i. p. 298. Will. Pict. 133. “Protinùs, equorum ope relictâ, cuncti pedites constitere densiùs conglobati.” So Guy, 369;
“Nescia gens belli solamina spernit equorum,
Viribus et fidens hæret humo pedibus,
Et decus esse mori summum dijudicat armis,
Sub juga ne tellus transeat alterius.”
(The Peterborough Chronicler himself could not have asked for a nobler panegyric on his countrymen than these two lines.) He presently adds (377);
“Omnes descendunt et equos post terga relinquunt,
Affixique solo bella ciere tubis.”
