Note 1284 — Chapter XII · REGIONAL GEOGRAPHY

Reading edition

The Jerome map of the East (Miller, Mappaemundi, vol. iii, 1895, pl. 1) and the Henry of Mayence map of the world (ibid., pl. 2) show these rivers and give their Greek names, Hydaspes, Indus, and Hipanis. Pullé, op. cit., pt. 2, pp. 28, 31, believes that the shape of the coast line, the Greek names of the rivers, the position of Taprobane, and other details on these maps strongly suggest the Ptolemaic representation of the East. The resemblances in form to the Ptolemaic map, however, are too doubtful to warrant us in assuming any direct Ptolemaic influence.
