Note 1224 — Chapter XVIII

Reading edition

Monts was so disgusted with Italy that he wished the terms of the Triple Alliance to be radically modified at the next renewal (Monts to Tschirschky, June 8, 1906, G.P., XXI, 364 ff., No. 7156). The Austrian Ambassador reported that the German Emperor said that “it would give him great satisfaction for us at a suitable moment, which in view of the unreliable policy of the kingdom is not impossible, to teach the latter [Italy] a wholesome lesson, even by arms” (Pribram, The Secret Treaties of Austria-Hungary, II, 138).
