This e-text includes characters that will only display in UTF-8 (Unicode) file encoding:
♄ ♃ ♂ ☉ (astronomical symbols) œ (oe ligature) α β γ δ ε (Greek letters) † ✠ ▽ (symbols)
If any of these characters do not display properly, or if the quotation marks in this paragraph appear as garbage, you may have an incompatible browser or unavailable fonts. First, make sure that the browser’s “character set” or “file encoding” is set to Unicode (UTF-8). You may also need to change your browser’s default font.
The most commonly used symbols are explained in the author’s introduction. The first four, along with ✠ (Maltese cross) and ▽ (inverted triangle), will have mouse-hover identifications on all occurrences:
♄ (Saturn = fruiting) ♃ (Jupiter = perennial) ♂ (Mars = biannual) ☉ (Sun = annual) † (dagger = plants known only from imperfect specimens)
All asterisks and question marks are in the original text. Missing periods (full stops) have been silently supplied; all other typographical errors have been corrected and marked with mouse-hover popups. Corrections from the author’s Errata list are similarly marked.
The Errata and Addenda from the original text are shown at the end of the e-text. All sources that could be identified are also listed.
