Transcriber’s Note

Spelling and punctuation in the quoted material was generally left as printed.

At pp. 96-100, there is a transcript of correspondence that includes interspersed blank spaces, apparently where there were gaps in the original. They are preserved here.

At 19.6, Capt. William Hawkins is said to be “trading on the coast of Brazil as early as 1630”. His son, Capt. John Hawkins is said to have been born in 1532. The year 1630 is clearly an error, and certainly should be 1530.

At 99.19, asterisks are used to elide a word (‘piss’?) which was likely deemed unseemly.

Errors deemed most likely to be the printer’s have been corrected, and are noted here. The references are to the page and line in the original.
