Note 185 — Chapter V
Reading edition
Clanmolinespick is, we believe, more correctly clann-maol-an-easbuig (the last pronounced cspick), and means "the clan" or "family of the servant of the bishop." They are probably the Irish ancestors of the Macmillans of Knapdale in Argyleshire. The word "maol," "a tonsured servant," occurs in Malise (maol-Josa), "a servant of Jesus," a family name of the old Earls of Strathearn; and easbuig in Gillespie or Gillespic, "a servant" or "gillie of the bishop."
