Editorial note — PART I: TEXTS (continued 7)
Reading edition
The Editor’s introduction notes:
Additions are made within [square brackets], and interlineations are printed between `accents´.
Several selections were printed in parallel, on facing pages. They are given here in two forms. First, each version is shown separately, with all notes and marginal information. Then the two are shown side by side, with text only.
Line divisions in prose selections will not correspond to the printed original, as shown by marginal line numbers. Words cited in the linenotes are underlined if not already set off by `accents´ (above) or similar markings.
Page numbers from the source MSS are shown as printed—inline in the prose passages, marginal in verse—with their original brackets. Page breaks in verse were marked with a simple line |.
A few Linenotes were separated by semicolons (;) instead of extra space; these have been regularized to line breaks in the e-text.
Line numbers are in multiples of 5. Both in the e-text and in the original book, variations are for mechanical reasons such as unusually long lines, or to avoid collision with marginal folio numbers.
When a new selection began at mid-page, linenotes were sometimes identified by selection number. These were randomly printed in upper or lower case, as “XVII” or “xvii”.
