Note 53 — Tyanḍi Båråbudur.
J. H. translation
In Mr. A. Tissandier’s work “Cambodge et Java” published by Mason at Paris in 1896, we find opposite page 124 a good engraving of this last sculpture (picture XXVIII); but the author, who even dares maintain that this whole series has nothing to do with Buddhism, says that it represents a young, richly diademed Hindu worshipping the bull (the nandi) of Shiva! By so much ignorance Tissandier blames his work, and ... himself. Striving we may err, but let us at any case strive after science within reach.
