Reading edition
Roscher, Über Selene und Verwandtes, pp. 46 sqq. The interlunar days were selected by the ancients for the celebration of the sacred marriages of the gods and goddesses and, particularly, of the sun and moon. At least from the time of Thales the conjunction of the two luminaries was indicated by the same term σύνοδος (coitus) which was applied to the act of procreation (ibid., pp. 76 sqq.).
