Note 498 — Chapter V · LUNAR SUPERSTITIONS AND FESTIVALS

Reading edition

Yasna, i, 8 (so also ibid., ii, 8; compare Yast vii, 4). See L. H. Gray, “Festivals and Feasts (Iranian),” Hastings’s Encyclopædia of Religion and Ethics, v, 872; L. H. Mills, in Sacred Books of the East, xxxi, 198, 205; W. Geiger, Civilization of the Eastern Irānians, London, 1885, i, 146 n.¹ The term vishaptatha, here translated “the intervening seventh” refers to the seventh day between the new moon (on the 1st) and the full moon (on the 15th), that is, to the 8th day of the month (E. Bartholomae, Altiranisches Wörterbuch, Strassburg, 1904, col. 1472). The theories as to the meaning of vishaptatha, advanced by J. Darmesteter, have not won the acceptance of scholars (Sacred Books of the East, xxiii, 90 n.⁵; Le Zend-Avesta, Paris, 1892-1893, i, 12 n.³⁴).
