Note 474 — Chapter V · LUNAR SUPERSTITIONS AND FESTIVALS

Reading edition

Ibid., ii, 1, 4 (S. B. E., xiii, 240). This rule is to be understood as requiring an assembly to be held on the fourteenth or the fifteenth of each half-month, according as the month had twenty-nine or thirty days. In other words an uposatha service on the fourteenth day of a short month was to be followed by a celebration on the fifteenth of the following long month. Compare ibid., ii, 34, 1. The important word “half,” which has been inserted above, was omitted by an unfortunate oversight in the translation of this passage from the Mahâvagga, as given in the Sacred Books of the East. It appears, however, in Mr. H. C. Warren’s rendering of the same passage (Buddhism in Translations, Cambridge [Mass.], 1909, p. 404).
