Discorsi, lib. II, cap. II, pag. 188-9. «A candid examination will show that the Christian civilisations have been as inferior to the Pagan ones in civic and intellectual virtues, as they have been superior to them in the virtues of humanity and chastity. We have already seen that one remarkable feature of the intellectual movement that preceded Christianity, was the gradual decadence of patriotism, etc.» Vol. II, pag. 148.
