Narrative of the Circumnavigation of the Globe by the Austrian Frigate Novara, Volume I

Note 98 — VIII. (continued 2)

Reading edition

A late survey, instituted with the intention of erecting a lighthouse on the "Basses," proved a failure, in consequence of the ground having sunk in while an examination was being made by the diver, and left nothing but holes filled with water, in which, according to the report of the fishermen, besides fish and molluscs, sea-snakes are occasionally seen, of a light-gray colour, and about 4 or 5 feet in length.
