TRANSLATOR’S NOTE
Constance Garnett translation
This volume concludes the ‘Memoirs of Herzen.’ Nothing in the complete Russian edition has been omitted except two or three pages, which are practically repetition of earlier passages, and a brief section, Aphorismata, the humour of which has so evaporated with the lapse of time that it could hardly be made intelligible to an English reader.
I have ventured to add to the volume Herzen’s famous letter to Michelet, which is of interest in view of what has actually happened in Russia during the last ten years.
