Note 465 — Chapter VI · SOME REMARKS ON THE COMPARATIVE GEOGRAPHY OF THE WESTERN AND NORTHERN PARTS OF ASIA MINOR.
Reading edition
This has been admitted by nearly all the writers on the Trojan question, but has been stated with particular clearness by Major Rennell (Observations, Sect. IV.). I shall therefore merely cite the verse of Homer, which furnishes the direct proof.
... Ἕκτωρ ... μάχης ἐπ’ ἀριστερὰ μάρνατο πάσης, Ὄχθας πὰρ ποταμοῖο Σκαμάνδρου.... Il. Λ. v. 497.
It is almost unnecessary to add, that the poet here, as elsewhere, speaks of the left of the Greeks. Hector was opposed to Ajax, whose station was on the Greek left.
