Harold Sunderland translation

Abu-l-Hasan Ali, the son of Mansur, known as Ibn al-Qarih, was born at Aleppo in 962 and died at Mosul sometime after 1030. A professor of literature in Syria and Egypt, he was also a mediocre poet, cf. Yaqut’s Dictionary, VI, 5, p. 424. Ibn al-Qarih’s epistle, to which the Risala is a reply, has not been preserved.
