It is possible that Theophrastus derived the word pericarp from Aristotle. Cp. De anima, ii. 1, 412ᵇ 2. In the passage τὸ φύλλον περικαρπίου σκέπασμα, τὸ δὲ περικάρπιον καρποῦ, in the De anima the word does not, however, seem to have the full technical force that Theophrastus gives to it.
