A FAREWELL.

Drifting on the darkened waters
Are Earth’s dying sons and daughters,
And, like ships that meet each other,
Brother gives a hail to brother:
Brief the pleasure of that meeting,
And forgotten oft the greeting.
Could I think that other faces
Would of me blot out all traces.
Though I cannot be thy lover,
Clouds my path would gather over;
From remembrance, then, endeavor
Not to blot me out forever.
Fare thee well! must now be spoken,
And another tie be broken;
Though the hour hath come to sever,
Lady! I’ll forget thee never,
But thy warmth of soul remember
Till extinct life’s wasting ember.
