Rossetti was a Carbonaro; but (I understand) he was not enrolled in that secret society until the second half of the year 1820, when, as the constitution had been already granted by the King, there was nothing illegal in his being a member. The word Carbonaro means literally “coalman, charcoal-burner”: hence certain technical terms of the sect, occurring further on.—W.
