The statements here made about the Principe di Canosa are not inventions; they will be found confirmed in Colletta’s Storia del Regno di Napoli, Book viii. Canosa’s scheme amounted (in general terms) to an attempt to get up in 1816 a massacre of the Carbonari and their sympathizers, by a hostile sect named the Calderari.—W.
