Note 110 — PART III. INFLUENCE OF COMETS AND PLANETS UPON ONE ANOTHER.
Reading edition
Littrow, Astron. ii. 184. (Vien. 1825.) Shrötermakes the diameters of all these planets immensely greater than Herschel; thus rendering the comparative heights of their atmospheres less surprising. According to him, Pallas is 2099 miles, Ceres 1624 miles, Juno 1425 miles, and Vesta 238 miles. The only measurements of the atmospheres which have as yet been made, are by Shröter. If they had been computed by Herschel, they would probably have been made much less.
