Note 55 — TANOAN EPOCH
Reading edition
The author has the following evidence that the inhabitants of the village at Chevlon were the historic Chipias. The Hopi have a legend that the large ruin called Tcipiaiya by the Zuñi was also situated on a river midway between Walpi and Zuñi. The Hopi also say that the Chevlon pueblo was inhabited by the Piba (Tobacco) clan and that the Awatobi chief, Tapolo, who brought the Tataukyamû fraternity to Walpi from Awatobi, belonged to the Tobacco clan. The Tewa name of the Tataukyamû is Tcipiaiyu, or “men from Tcipia.”
