Since writing the above I have been pleased to have Signor Venturi tell me that he, too, considered the work to be by Giorgione. He does not agree with me about the Benson, Beaumont and National Gallery Holy Families, but he does not share the Catena theory of their origin. His full views will unquestionably be propounded in his forthcoming edition of Vasari’s Life of Giorgione. Cook also thinks this Virgin is by Giorgione. Venturi’s views on Giorgione are indicated in the Galleria Crespi, p. 133 f.
