The Merchant in Persia (Travels of Italians in Persia, Hakluyt Society, London, 1873, p. 160), who visited Armenia in the first quarter of the sixteenth century, describes it as follows:—“This Calata (sic) was anciently a large city, as can be seen by the buildings, but is now reduced to a small fortress.” ↑
