Note 18 — PART II
Reading edition
The song was printed separately in 1521 as Ain new lied herr Vlrichs von Hutten. The phrase ich habs gewagt, translating the Latin jacta est alea, became a sort of motto with Hutten after he had taken, in the fall of 1520, the momentous step of defending Luther and advocating a German war of liberation.
