Note 1 — From the Low German ‘Reinke de Vos,’ Book 2: Reinke under the Pope’s ban; Martin the Ape offers to assist him.

Reading edition

These three lines, which are a sort of motto, precede a picture representing a rich man seated at a table which is loaded with money and plate. Two poor travelers approach and look covetously upon the wealth. All three men wear the fool’s cap.

2. The picture shows a fool stirring porridge and looking into a mirror.

3. A note by Simrock states that upon the old bridge at Heidelberg was formerly to be seen an emblematic ape, with the verses:

Was hast du mich hier anzugaffen? Sahst du noch nie den alten Affen? Zu Heidelberg sieh hin und her; Du findest meinesgleichen mehr.
