Note 184 — DEFENCE OF LUCKNOW. 29th. June to 25th. September, 1857.

Reading edition

One of the most remarkable relics of the siege that I have seen was the mess plate of the 32nd. regiment. The spoons were twisted by the effect of the enemy’s shot, and the soup tureen presented a singular appearance, the handles being nearly wrenched off. These battered articles were sent to Windsor Castle for the inspection of Her Majesty.
