Note 30 — PETER KALM’s TRAVELS. (continued 5)

Johann Reinhold Forster translation

In his Systema Naturæ, he calls it Bruchus Pisi, or the Pease Beetle; and says that the Gracula Quiscula, or Purple daw of Catesby, is the greatest destroyer of them, and though this bird has been proscribed by the legislature of Pensylvania, New Jersey, and New England as a maize-thief, they feel however the imprudence of extirpating this bird; for a quantity of worms which formerly were eaten by these birds destroy their meadows at present.
