Note 70 — MYTHS RECORDED IN ENGLISH AT WRANGELL

Reading edition

“The disobedience of the young woman in looking up contrary to the directions of her brothers is brought up to girls at that period in life. This is why they do whatever their mothers tell them at that time, and do not displease their brothers. They always think of Łqǃayāˊkǃ’s sister. So this part of the story always taught them to be obedient.

Anciently we were taught commandments similar to those of the whites. Don’t look down on a person because he is proud. Don’t look down on a low-caste person. Don’t steal. Don’t lie.” (From the writer’s informant.)
