Reading edition
The total population, Russian and aboriginal, according to the Journal de St. Petersbourg, August 7th, 1881, quoting the most recent statistics, numbers 1,388,000 souls; but I am not sure whether “souls” may not mean males only, as it sometimes does in Russia. They are divided among the provinces as follows: Tobolsk, 463,000; Tomsk, 324,000; Irkutsk, 165,000; Yeneseisk, 164,000; Trans-Baikal, 141,000; Amur, 3,000; Sea Coast, 13,000; and Yakutsk, 112,000. This says nothing of Akmolinsk and Semipolatinsk.
