This probably is worse towards Kamchatka; for in 1878 there were four medical posts vacant—that of chemist at Nikolaefsk, and doctor at Sofiisk, Ghijiga, and Okhotsk respectively—not a matter for much wonder, seeing that the salary at the best was but £40 a year!
