Note 5 — Chapter XL · THE UPPER AMUR.

Reading edition

After having taken with me my cuisine several times, I am disposed briefly to advise any who may care to be counselled, by saying “don’t.” It certainly does not pay in Russia, for hot water may almost everywhere be had, and the people well understand the speedy preparation of the samovar. A lunch basket, however, is a great comfort, and I should not think of taking a long journey without one. The cuisine may occasionally be needed; but in going round the globe I used it only once, and when travelling last year over the Caucasus to Armenia not at all.
