Note 43 — SOME ACCOUNT OF MIDDLETON AND HIS WORKS.

Reading edition

This collection included The First Part of the Honest Whore—not then known to be partly written by Middleton (vol. iii.), A Mad World, my Masters (vol. v.), The Widow (vol. vi.), The Mayor of Queenborough (vol. xi.). In an unpublished letter from Bishop Warburton to Dodsley is the following passage: “But why would you give us such stuff as Fuimus Troes, Grim the Collier, and Microcosmus, rather than three other good comedies (if there be so many) of Middleton’s?” Blurt Master Constable was reprinted in a volume edited by Chetwood, and entitled A Select Collection of Old Plays, Dublin, 1750. In the second edition of Dodsley’s Old Plays, 1780, Reed inserted The Second Part of the Honest Whore (vol. iii.) and The Roaring Girl (vol. vi.).
