Note 447 — ACT II.
Reading edition
A particular manner of smoking tobacco. In the Character of the Persons prefixed to Every Man out of his Humour it is said of Cavaliero Shift—“His chief exercises are taking the whiff, squiring a cockatrice, &c.” We learn from the Gull’s Horn-book (Dekker’s Works, ed. Grosart, ii. 242) that it was part of a gallant’s education to be skilled in taking the whiff.
