The Works of John Marston. Volume 1

Note 88 — ACT II.

Reading edition

“The exclamation was too fashionable in the time of Marston for those who had nothing else to say; and is ridiculed by Ben Jonson in the character of Orange in Every Man out of his Humour, as ‘O Lord, sir,’ is by Shakespeare in All’s Well that Ends Well. Orange is thus described:—‘’Tis as dry an Orange as ever grew: nothing but salutation; and, O God, sir; and, it please you to say so, sir.’”—Dilke.
