The Works of John Marston. Volume 1

Note 16 — A. H. BULLEN, B.A.

Reading edition

We have “Port Esquiline” twice in the Scourge of Villainy; but the very phrase Paunch of Esquiline occurs in Histriomastix (Simpson’s School of Shakspere, ii. 51), an anonymous play which undoubtedly contains some of Marston’s work. “Zodiac,” “ecliptic line,” “demonstrate,” and “tropics” are also found in Histriomastix (ibid. ii. 25-6); they are not in Marston’s satires. The other words will be found in the Scourge of Villainy.
