The Works of Alexander Pope, Volume 2 (of 10), Poetry - Volume 2

Note 1088 — AN ESSAY ON MAN, IN FOUR EPISTLES (continued 3)

Reading edition

After Pope's death "tremble" was misprinted "trembles," and the error has been retained in most editions. The construction is, "Let planets and suns run lawless through the sky, let being be wrecked on being, world on world, let heaven's whole foundations nod to their centre, and let nature tremble to the throne of God!"
