Note 183 — Chapter III · THE MISSION OF BEAUTY

George Herbert Ely translation

This portrait, painted by an Italian, no longer exists, but an excellent miniature copy, executed in Henri IV.’s time, is to be found in the rare manuscript known as the Book of Hours of Catherine de’ Medici. The other miniatures in this manuscript are made after French portraits, and do not admit of so extravagant an interpretation. Louise of Savoy is represented as a widow, in the classical severe and ungainly costume.
