Living in 1874 as Lt. J.R. Smith, h. p. 38th Foot. Entered the army in 1814. Was present at the storming of Cambray, and afterwards at the capture of Hattras, in the East Indies. Also served in the Deccan campaign of 1817–18. His commissions are dated: Ensign, Oct. 13th, 1814; lt., March 20th, 1824.
