Eldest son of Thomas Swinburne, of Pontop Hall, co. Durham, by Charlotte, dau. and co-heir of Robert Spearman. Attained rank of maj.-gen., and was F.R.S. He was at the taking of Peronne in 1815, and in 1823 exchanged as capt. to 3rd Dgn. Gds. Was twice married, and left issue by both wives. D. 28th Feb., 1864.
