Note 313 — Chapter V · FLORENCE THE DOMINANT POWER IN TUSCANY.299

Linda Villari translation

The Fourteen are mentioned together with the Twelve in the cardinal's treaty of peace, and for some time later both bodies are simultaneously mentioned in the "Consulte," according to the usual Florentine custom of enumerating the old as well as the new magistrates. Subsequently the Fourteen alone are recorded, and the Twelve disappear entirely.
