The Teaching and Cultivation of the French Language in England during Tudor and Stuart Times

Note 987 — Chapter VI

Reading edition

Flecknoe, Characters, p. 12. Pepys describes a French dance at Court (Diary, Nov. 15, 1666), which was "not extraordinarily pleasing." He much admired the dancing of the young Princess Mary, taught by a Frenchman (Diary, March 2, 1669). The maîtres d'armes were often Italians and Spaniards. There were protests against the French and Italian singing and dancing "taught by the dregs of Italy and France" (Satirical Reflections, 1707).
